I am Sam: After Reading

2.) Dynamic Characters are the ones who grow/learn and understand new things because of their experience through the story

In I am Sam there are many dynamic characters, like Rita, his lawyer, because throughout the movie she slowly respects Sam more and more, since she thinks he couldn’t understand anything at the start. Another example is Lucy, Sam’s daughter. In the movie, Lucy thinks she’s adopted and doesn’t respect her father. Since she is getting taken away she slowly realizes how much it means to have a loving father like Sam. The last example is Randy, Lucy’s foster parent. When Lucy arrives at Randy’s house Randy is super excited that she gets to take care of a daughter, since she always wanted a daughter but never got one. Through the next few weeks with her experiences with Lucy she realizes, she’s not cut out to be the mother of Lucy and that Lucy needs her father.

5.) Rita’s life parallels Sam’s – this means his lawyer’s life has many similarities to his own. Can you identify these similarities?

Rita, Sam’s lawyer, and Sam both have many similarities in I am Sam, since they both have young children they care about a lot. This leads to the first similarity, is that they both have kids the care about but, can’t show it in their own kind of ways. Both of them also feel like everyone is better than them and they showcase this a lot in the movie. This is because Sam has a disability, which makes it hard for him to take care of Lucy, and Rita feels like everyone is perfect but her at being a lawyer, so she tries to be good and ignores her kid in the process. This is a key part of the movie though, because, with Sam’s disability and not being able to take care of Lucy, it gets her taken away. With this problem, he goes to Rita to try and get a lawyer and get Lucy back.

1.) How is the music used in the film to help develop the mood?

Music plays key role in I am Sam. not only is it there to give the movie some background noise. It helps set the mood by playing music that goes along with the scene, like happy music with a happy scene, or sad music with a sad scene. Another way it uses music in this movie is that it uses all beetle’s songs played by different artists. Since Sam’s is a big Beetles fan in the movie and refers to them a lot, they use all Beetle’s songs just to get you more into the music. With Sam referring to the Beetles for a good chunk of the movie the music is very fitting for the movie.

3.) There are three acts in I am Sam. Give Evidence that supports this.

In I am Sam there are three acts, When Sam has Lucy, when Sam may lose Lucy, and when Sam loses Lucy. There is quite a bit of evidence that supports this, like when Sam does have Lucy and is happy, and it goes on to maybe losing Lucy, and then it goes on to him losing her. Some more evidence to this is that after an act ends there will be a subtle thing that happens like a black screen. This is a unique thing to do because there aren’t many movies that are split up into different parts or acts. So, in conclusion, there are unique acts in I am Sam splitting up the film.

4.) This movie centers around Sam’s abilities and mental capacity, but there are times Sam proves more insightful of his other fellow mature characters.

There are many times in I am Sam when Sam proves to be more insightful than other mature characters. For example, when Sam is talking to Rita about getting Lucy back and getting a lawyer, Rita doesn’t want to be Sam’s lawyer because she thinks she thinks he can’t understand anything and isn’t smart. So when Rita’s not paying attention to him he asks, “What if your kid was taken from you, and there was nothing you could do about it, wouldn’t you try and do everything you can?”. This is an example one of the many times that Sam is probably the most insightful person in the movie. Another example is when Sam’s says that all you need is love to raise a child. He says this in court when they are fighting to get Lucy back.

6.) Camera angels influence the way the scene is interpreted by the audience. Here are particular camera angles to sway the audience.

There were a lot of clever camera angels to influence a scene in I am Sam. Like at the start, they zoom in on Sam organizing coffee cream and sugar which make interpret he has OCD. Another example is when they filmed outside and made people hold the cameras to make it seem like there are other people around him and just to add some affect. Since this movie has all these camera effects it adds some cool angels and pizzazz to the movie, and just add to the feel of the movie in general to make it feel like your in the film, with Sam, Lucy, and the other characters in the movie.
